Modern Foreign Languages
At Berger Primary School we teach our children to express themselves in a range of other languages and to enjoy understanding and responding to its speakers.
Language teaching provides the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries while also providing them with opportunities to communicate for practical purposes. We are proud of the diverse range of languages our children speak at home and encourage and promote the use of these home languages at school.
Learning different languages provide children with opportunities to access and understand other cultures; deepening children’s understanding of the world and our diverse school community.
EYFS and KS1 Skills
In Early Years and Key Stage 1 we create opportunities for children to be exposed to as many languages as possible. This is achieved through weekly Turkish lessons, parent volunteers reading stories in their home languages and by completing daily routines, such as calling the register, in different languages. Older children develop their confidence and understanding act as ‘Language Buddies’ who visit EYFS and KS1 to support and encourage younger children’s language skills.
KS2 Skills
Our Key Stage 2 children learn Spanish using a range of resources such as Language Angels and Education City. Spanish lessons are planned using the ‘Language Angels’ teaching resources. PowerPoints and sound clips help the children to speak with increasing fluency and practise their pronunciation, while interactive games, songs and stories allow the children to recognise written language.
The teaching of Spanish focuses on enabling substantial progress in this language by providing a balance of spoken and written language. This lays the foundation for foreign language teaching at Key Stage 3.
Turkish Club
Our streamed after-school Turkish clubs enable children to further develop and extend their Turkish language skills.
