WAMHS Project

At Berger Primary School, we are committed to improving support for our students' emotional and mental wellbeing, and therefore are excited to be working with the Wellbeing and Mental Health in Schools (WAMHS) initiative.

Our CAMHS link worker helps us to think about our students’ needs in school, how to best support them, and how to refer them to specialist services if they need more help. This might mean school staff discussing pupils with the CAMHS link worker to decide what help needs to be given.

We are supported by an Education Mental Health Practitioner who will deliver targeted intervention groups and parent sessions to develop our whole school wellbeing.

Personal Development

At Berger we believe that in order to learn and live better, we need to ensure that our children have a holistic awareness of themselves. This involves understanding our needs as human beings that exist within a society. We aim to achieve this by providing the children with chances to learn about their physical, mental and emotional wellbeing in a variety of ways throughout the curriculum and beyond.

Philosophy

We hold weekly Philosophy for Children Assemblies and lessons that develop their understanding, their ability to argue and analyse; and their confidence in challenging or agreeing with opinions in a respectful and positive way.

PSHE and RSE

We deliver consistent Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) workshops and lessons. These ensure that children learn, discuss and build on their understanding of their rights, needs and responsibilities as citizens in a diverse society and establishes the building blocks of acceptance and pride in who we are. At Berger we believe that children need to be knowledgeable of their bodies and their rights to ensure their bodies are safe. This means delivering age appropriate lessons that use scientific language for all body parts and human reproduction. We also believe, in line with governmental legislation, that children need to be taught about how relationships might impact their life. We want to provide our students with the interpersonal skills and knowledge to avoid negative relationships to take place in their life.

Berger Together

We celebrate our diversity through Berger Together and encourage children to embrace others as having the equal right to be and celebrate who they are. This provides children with confidence and a positive attitude that will create a more accepting community and unify those that in the past might have been excluded.

Berger Daily Mile

Each day children and adults at Berger come together to enjoy running or walking a mile around the school grounds. This has not only helped to improve our fitness and stamina but also develops children’s concentration and resilience in a fun and active way. Yoga and meditation During lunchtimes children benefit from yoga and meditation sessions. Through these sessions, the children become more aware of their bodies and the link they have to their mind and wellbeing. Yoga and meditation also gives our pupils practical guidance on how to deal with stress and other upsets.
