Autumn 1 - Stone Age/Bronze Age

This term we had a great time looking at Britain in the Stone Age and the Bronze Age, learning about how things were different in the distant past and focusing on some of the inventions and innovations that helped people’s lives change over time.

Rocks are SOO COOOL.

This half term we have been learning about why rocks are SOO COOOL.

We have learned about tectonic plates.

We have learned about the layers of the Earth.

We have found out about different types of rock and fossils.

We have learned about volcanoes and made some too!

Bra-ZIL!

This term we have put on our adventure caps and explored the highs and lows of Brazil’s tropical climate, created beautiful masks, done some animal rapping and even put on our very own CARNIVAL! Please check the Class Dojo for some fun videos of our learning.

Magnets, forces and making games!

This half term we learned all about magnets and forces. We created our own magnet people and took them on an adventure to find out what they are attracted to.

We used all our knowledge of magnets and our DT skills to create some fun board games!

Groovy Ancient Egyptians

This half term we explored the lives of Ancient Egyptians. From their fantastic sciences to beautiful art and secret messages, from their houses to the treasures they buried with their dead; we saw it all!

From the Stone Age to the Bronze Age

This half term we have been traveling in time. From the dawn of mankind, through their cold dark caves all the way up until they started working with metal. Here is our journey!

First we enjoyed life in a Stone Age village. We hunted, made tools, got dressed up, cooked food and created cave paintings.

For writing, we wrote a letter to our Stone Age friend Ug, persuading him to visit the Bronze Age because, well, life is just better!

Finally, we created some Stone Age structures on a very special Forest School trip. We had such a good time!

Volcanoes!

This half term the children in Cherry class have been learning about volcanos! The children designed, built and decorated volcanos using cardboard, recycled bottles and papier-mâché. Once we had created our volcanoes, we used different ingredients to cause an explosion!

Portuguese Pavements in Brazil!

As part of our topic of Brazil, the children in Cherry class designed mosaics based on the Portuguese Pavements found in the streets of Brazil. The children created their own mosaic designs using contrast, colour, drawings and pattern. We voted for our favourite design and created it as a class.

Iron Man Board Games!

This half term, the children in Cherry class have been learning about the book ‘Iron Man’ by Ted Hughes. We undertook a D&T project, where the children evaluated different board games, created a design brief for a board game, and designed their own game, before eventually making, playing and evaluating their own game. In science we have been learning about forces and magnets, and after investigating which types of materials are magnetic, all the children incorporated magnets into their own board games.

Mummifying tomatoes!

The children have been learning about the Ancient Egyptian mummification process in topic this term. We followed the same steps with tomatoes to see what changes we could see over time. We discovered that the mummification process was rather disgusting!

Ancient Egypt

Cherry class had fun on our Ancient Egypt wow day! We turned ourselves into Ancient Egyptian Pharaohs and we also learned to write our names in hieroglyphics! Cherry Class had a very special visitor from Ancient Egypt… Cleopatra! The children asked her questions about her life as a pharaoh and learnt some very interesting facts!

Stone Age Cave Painting

Cherry Class had lots of fun using natural resources to create our own Stone Age cave painting! We turned our classroom into a cave, and created some artwork using only materials they would have found in the Stone Age - berries and charcoal! We also made Stone Age style art using paints and paintbrushes to compare how much easier it is to paint with modern materials.

Stone Age Pinch Pots!

Cherry Class made clay pinch pots to understand how our Stone Age ancestors lived. We learned that everything in the Stone Age had to be created or collected. Life was tough!

pão de queijo

This half term Cherry Class designed and baked a traditional Brazilian Bread, pão de queijo, as part of our D&T project. The children enjoyed shaping their bread and even tasting the finished product!

Brazilian Carnival

This half term, the children in Cherry class have been learning about Brazil! As part of our wow day, the children designed their own masks and headdresses to wear on our carnival parade through the school. The children danced along to some Brazilian music, and even performed some samba moves!

Making Iron Man board games with magnets!

This half term, the children in Cherry class have been learning about the book ‘Iron Man’ by Ted Hughes. We undertook a D&T project, where the children evaluated different board games, created a design brief for a board game, and designed their own game, before eventually making, playing and evaluating their own game!
