Summer 1

It was a busy half term in Year 5, with a great visit to the London Buddhist Centre in Bethnal Green to support our RE work and consolidate our learning on Buddhist forms of worship.

Additionally, we had a great Forest School session looking at human and physical features for our Geography topic on London.

Spring 2

Our topic for this half term is Space and the Solar System. This half term we were thrilled to visit the Science Museum, where we learned all about how people have been to the moon, and looked at different types of rockets. We also had a morning at Cardinal Pole Secondary School making keyrings in the DT workshop. Back at school, we designed our own rockets to a specific design brief.

Spring 1

This half term our topic focus was Nelson Mandela and South Africa. We discussed whether Mandela, who spent 27 years in prison, should be recognised as a hero or as a criminal. We also learned about protest movements, looked at different forms of protest and listened to protest songs.

Autumn 2

This half term we looked at the impact of the Vikings on Britain - learning about their arrival and the conflict arising from their invasion. We learned about their way of life, religion, clothing and housing, as well as their weapons and warfare. Among many highlights, the children particularly enjoyed making Viking-themed board games.

Autumn 1

This half term we began work on the Anglo-Saxons, learning about where they came from and how they lived. In art we made crosses like the crosses they made after their conversion to Christianity. In DT we researched, designed and made shields in the style of Anglo-Saxon shields.

Summer 2

The second summer half term was incredibly busy but also incredibly fun! We had a series of six Forest School sessions at our site on Hackney Marshes and enjoyed a visit to the London Buddhist Centre near Bethnal Green. We focused on stop motion animation for Sky Arts Week and had our first Summer Fun Day in the last week of term.

Summer 1

Here are some photos of activities in Year 5 in the first Summer half term. It was a busy half term, with a successful camping trip in Brentwood, and a visit from a theatre group who gave us a performance about Air Quality and Sustainability.

Swimming at the Aquatics Centre

Year 5 have been lucky enough to have had a two week intensive course of swimming lessons at the London Aquatics Centre.

All children made great progress. We ended the sessions with lunch in the Olympic Park.

Spring 1

Here are some photos of what we got up to in the first half of the Spring Term in Spruce Class.

Forest School

We went to Forest School on Hackney Marshes and learned about animal homes and threats to local habitats.

Autumn 2 - The Vikings

Here are some pictures of what we got up to in Spruce Class in the second Autumn half term, in which we had lots of fun learning about the Vikings and their impact on Britain.

Local History Week

To celebrate Hackney’s interesting and diverse history we studied the impact of Windrush on Hackney’s culture. We looked at poems by Vivian Usherwood, made our own calypso songs about coming to London, and designed ‘Windrush’ statues to commemorate people that inspire us.

Autumn 1 - The Anglo-Saxons

In the Autumn Term children in Year 5 learn about the Anglo-Saxons. We made leaflets highlighting some of the key information children have found out about the Anglo-Saxons, and some newspaper reports on the discovery of ancient burial site at Sutton Hoo in Suffolk. We also designed and made Anglo-Saxon shields.
