Forest school
We had a great learning experience building shelters in forest school.
There was no writing done in school today because it’s ‘No Pens Day’. Children had a great deal of fun. In literacy, children acted out Mary Seacole’s life. In maths, they explored shape and thought about properties of 2D shapes, such as how many sides and vertices, and straight and curved sides. In art, children used shape to create pieces of art using paint, print and pastels, All in all; a very fun day!
As part of our History topic Florence Nightingale came to visit! Poplar class had a great morning learning all about Florence’s life and what she did. Florence was lucky she was wealthy and even though she was a girl her father wanted her to be educated. We travelled with Florence to Scutari hospital and she trained us in how to be super nurses.
Children learnt about Armistice and made Remembrance Day poppies to commemorate the fallen soldiers.
Children have been learning how to sketch. They understand about the grading system for pencils and about pressure control and understanding light to give them different shades.
They also used perplex sheets to draw they friend so they understand the proportion of a face, ready for when they draw portraits.
Children are learning about Florence Nightingale. They cut out lamps and used tissue paper to fill to create a stained glass effect.
Everyone dressed up in bright colours and learnt about how to stay visible in the dark.
Poplar class learnt about the artist Kandinsky and his style of abstract art. They attempted to make concentric circles in fire colours. Children also had a go make paper look aged by tea-staining it.
Lots of art based learning. Children made quills with straws and dipped them into ink to try writing. It was more difficult than they thought!
We have packed a lot into this term. We’ve learnt all about the Great Fire of London. We have tested materials and their properties and we have created lots of artwork.
This term Poplar class have learned about plants in science and observed runner beans germinating. In topic the children have thought about the different types of transport in London and how this has changed in the last one hundred years. They have also done observational drawings about different modes of transport. In teams children have designed, created and evaluated models of different types of transport using axles and wheels in DT.
Poplar class had a special visitor. Florence talked about her life, the challenges she faced and the changes she made to nursing practice. Children pretended to be Queen Victoria, her family, her nurses and soldiers. It was great fun!
Poplar made Tudor houses and decorated them. Then they reenacted the Great Fire of London by putting them close together and setting fire to one. The children watched how the fire spread quickly.
Poplar class made quills and tried to write and draw with them. This is because Samuel Pepys wrote about the Great Fire of London in his diary. In those days people used quills to write with.
Poplar class did some marbling and cut out silhouettes of a London skyline to make amazing visual art pieces.
